Politics is tied together very strongly... and oftentimes, one issue (say, farm subsidies) will have major impacts on unrelated issues (like, poverty in Africa, or the environment).

Chris Monnier made a really good point about how our agricultural subsidies are actually indirectly killing the most desperate people in Africa, and keeping us addicted to oil for no good reason. Check it out, whatever ideology you hold.
